I'm Melissa. This is where I write things down and share new things. Sometimes I even post cute pictures of cats...
if you're looking for my portfolio,
it can be found here, or by clicking any of the links across the top of this page.
I just moved back to Ohio after living in the central valley of California for almost three years. People still mention that I'm all grown up and keep asking how being an adult is going, but I really don't know what they're referring to.
I'm officially a (self-proclaimed) curator -- OF GIFS. GIF CONNOISSEUR. Check it out. My GIF blog even made it to buzzfeed once.
ONE MORE CHECK OFF MY LIFELONG INTERNET TO-DO LIST.
Albums of note UPCOMING/2011/2010/2009
A list of albums from the year that had staying power. Not a top album list, because I haven't heard every album, so that just seems a bit silly to me -- the whole "of the year" thing... although I suppose in my own mind that's what they are...
THE ARCHIVES
Nostalgia
a place where I keep things that are already memories and store things that are currently in my life that will inevitably become memories. Vague enough?
Vestiges of a Life Soon Forgotten
A photographic series devoted to images taken in and around my apartment where I lived for 3 years in college. I moved out for good in December 2009.
Photobooth Sketches
photobooth documentation of sketches i have done and/or found.
Monthly Self Portrait Series
This was a short-lived project that sometimes shows up without warning again on my feed, but definately cannot be considered an "on-going" thing.
My New California Life
What started as an essay series about my experiences living on the left coast turned into a general account of my life here -- through words, photos and other ephemera.
jef etters tips of the day
Jef Etters was a colleague of mine who gave me life tips on a daily basis via a telephone call from a rotary phone. I would then transcribe the tips and post them here for the benefit of all mankind. He didn't know what tumblr was (nor does he now), but he did want to share all his wisdom with the world. enjoy.
PLEASE NOTE: Jef did finally get free long-distance after 7pm EST and will occasionally call to give me tips to transcribe. Be on the look out, it'll change your life.
ScreenCaptureSeries
Funny and or poignant things I feel the need to share with the world via screen capture. This project carries on with the luck that the internet will continue to bring the lulz. I think the odds are in our favor.

You will always be a part of my day; just as the sun and the shadows that fall behind me.

It’s Tuesday morning and I’m still recovering from a rogue migraine attack. I can’t let that slow me down too much, though. I’ve got things to cross off my to-do list.
Later this week I have a meeting with several individuals that could make for a very exciting change in my life. I’m kind of over-the-moon, but cannot share with you why. Actually, that might be an exaggeration. I could probably share with you, but I choose not to out of fear brought on by some sort of superstitious attitude. (I’m not normally superstitious — anxious, yes. The closest I get to superstitious on a normal day is by having some Stevie coming through the speakers of the hi-fi.)
The reason I’m so jazzed is because it could mean exciting things for not only me, but also for TeamTeam. I’ve loved having a creative endeavor to be involved with that includes my boyfriend, Daniel. It’s been hard to keep up with though, with everything else going on in both of our lives. If this opportunity works out, it would be something beneficial to both of us individually as well as a way for us to expand upon our ideas concerning the collaborative project.
It’s like I said a few days ago: I’m making great strides toward an end goal that I gave myself 5 years to accomplish. I can’t believe something like this has presented itself so quickly. I’m trying not to get my hopes up, but either way it goes I think eventually it will work out. I’m only a few months into a 5-year plan and already several of my large goals are almost completed.
I hope to have more updates later this week, but for now all I can say is Thursday night is going to make me pretty anxious.

TeamTeam Roll 001: 17
Double Exposure by Melissa Olson & Daniel Schultz
We’re a little behind, but this is still happening. We got some pretty exciting news today about a potential opportunity for TeamTeam that has us both pretty excited. We don’t want to put the cart before the horse though, so that’s really all we can say. Cross your fingers, say a prayer, throw a penny over your shoulder into a fountain — you know whatever you do for others when they’re awaiting word on something.

TeamTeam works hard for our creative community! If you are in or near Fresno tomorrow, be sure to stop by the event. You might even be able to snag a full size, real-life version of this poster for your home or office! WHAT?
I’m getting to do fun things. Again, you should come hang out tomorrow night and get one of these posters for yourself. Even if you don’t live in or near Fresno, this poster could be a valuable resource for you and your fellow hooligans/party goers/friends.
This is Aurora.
We are going to see her in LA this weekend and talk to her about her work. Check it out by clicking the image above. Check out her Etsy Shop and BUY SOME WORK.
We’re really excited about this new aspect of TeamTeam and starting to show all of our followers about the real life community that we are lucky enough to be a part of. We’ve got a lot in store, and we’re about to dig our heels in, so stay tuned!
We had a really great time meeting up with Aurora and I’m excited for what’s in the works for teamteam in the coming months. The outcome from our time together should be posted within a few weeks time, and after that we’re setting our sights pretty high, metaphorically shooting for the moon and whatnot… We’re not planning on hitting the roof, however. [In case you’re wondering, that’s a good thing. BONUS POINTS IF YOU CAN NAME THAT REFERENCE!]
We recently completed our first commission piece and sent the files off to press. It’s an infographic poster, and it has a STRIKE THROUGH VARNISH. The image seen above is a screen capture of the layer created to let the pressman know where we’d like that varnish. I wanted to post a sneak-peek image without giving too much away, and this screen capture was funny to me because, out of context, it’s completely useless - especially when it’s asking “So what’s this all about?”
[screen capture series; I designed an infographic poster and Daniel wrote the copy and this is a sneak peek of that infographic poster. 2011. m. olson]
TeamTeam Roll 001: 02
For the next month, TeamTeam will be showcasing our first series of double exposure photography. The main rule is fairly similar to The Project, each of us does our own thing, with our own set of assumptions and apprehensions without telling the other what we are planning — we don’t discuss it. There was no theme, we went forward with the only shared knowledge being that all of our photos would become something directly affected by the other person. In this way, the photographs have an immediate relationship to each other that is impossible to separate - similar to the way relationships (romantic or otherwise) occur in our lives. This is the first of a series of TeamTeam Rolls, which will become a regular feature.
In Chapter 3 of Trace William Cowen’s film series I Like You, artists Melissa Olson and Daniel Schultz discuss the unique beauty of a largely computer-based relationship, and its growth from digital to actual.
