Emergency Chocolate by Bloomsberry & Co. (55% Cocoa)
8.0 (On a scale from 0.0 to 10.0, with 10.0 being a perfect chocolate)
To begin, the idea behind the naming of this bar is genius. As the copy all over the packaging suggests, this bar is meant to be yours and yours alone, for those times when you need your fix. Not for sharing, maybe even to be kept under lock and key. However, I wouldn’t bother with such high security, and I’d probably be pretty inclined to share this one. It’s simply not a bar I feel like I’d want to keep eating. The smoky notes are too vague, and the liquor adds a sweetness that just gains momentum as you make your way through the bar. Following that lingering sweetness is a subtle vanilla note that just sits, and gets more obnoxious with time. That being said, it’s got amazing flavor for the price, and the flavor transitions are pretty smooth. A little crumbly, but for a bar that contains chocolate liquor, it holds up pretty well. The wrapper inside the box is pretty adorable as well, which always scores bonus points with someone like me. If one were to follow the instructions and really ration this bar out for use only in “emergencies,” i would say each section would be perfect for that. If you’re looking for a bar that you can enjoy in it’s entirety RIGHT NOW, I’d say to stick with something a little less contrived, flavor-wise. Overall, though, this bar is a great choice among all the other gimmicky chocolate bars out there. This one is not only amusing and well thought out (design-wise), but also delicious.
Le Chef Patissier All Natural Truffles
9.2 (On a scale from 0.0 to 10.0, with 10.0 being a perfect chocolate)
These truffles may have been a bad choice to feature as only the second chocolates on this blog. Not because they are sub-par, but quite the contrary. These are absolutely divine. From start to finish, each truffle is a perfect embodiment of the kinds of flavors and textures one should expect from a finely crafted chocolate. The cocoa coating is a gentle flavor, which eases you into a smooth, mild center. The bitterness lingers throughout, but isn’t very pronounced. A subtle smokiness draws out the naturally sweeter notes associated with this region’s (French) style of chocolate making. I would recommend these truffles whole-heartedly for anyone who constantly needs a fix to keep on hand. At only 3.99 a box, they would also make an excellent gift.
Chuao Todasana 74% cacao
6.2 (On a scale from 0.0 to 10.0, with 10.0 being a perfect chocolate)
This chocolate has good flavor, but leaves much to be desired on texture and finish. It lacks a certain veracity that one would expect from such a dark bar, but doesn’t completely disappoint with a biting bitterness in the middle notes. The texture is quite unsettling. As with most South American chocolate, this bar is grainy and not as smooth as it should be. The vanilla tones are too pronounced and very distracting, which may be an issue with production and I doubt if it comes from the type of bean harvested. This would be a good baking bar for brownies or a cake, but not one I would recommend for much else.
